The decision for a loft conversion has been made and you’ve decided to go ahead with the plans. However, you’re not sure where to start. Once you’ve taken the leap and chosen a loft conversion, things will go ahead quickly. There will be lots of planning and decision making. One of the decisions you have to make is, how do I prepare for a converted loft?
First things first:
Move items – This sounds so simple but nobody likes starting a renovation or a build with boxes and such like in the way. Emptying the room helps to create a clean and safe environment for everyone involved.
Ensure easy access – Provide a clear exit and entryway for the builders to access. This also helps make a safe environment for the builders.
Protect valuables – Dust travels, so to protect any possessions in the vicinity or rooms, get some dust sheets. This will help keep everything in the same condition it was before.
Do your homework – It’s important to think about the project before any work starts. What sort of space do you want to create? Get quotes from three tradesmen in your area and check they are registered with the relevant trade organisations. Ask them if they have any recently completed projects and if you can go to ask for a recommendation from the householder. Also, check online for reviews from trusted review sites.
Hire a skip – This depends on your own personal preference. Most customers do hire out a skip. This makes disposing of building materials easier and convenient.
Do I need to arrange other living arrangements? – In short, no not if you don’t want to. Yes, you might be without water, heating and electric at various times, and there might be a bit of mess and dust but there’s no reason to move out. If you would prefer to stay elsewhere temporarily, while work is being done this is also possible.
What’s the timescale? – It varies on size and how complex the job is but on average, they take around six weeks.
